Secondary Plasticizer

A secondary plasticizer is one that typically cannot be used as the sole plasticizer in a plasticized polymer. Secondary plasticizers may have limited compatibility with the polymer and/or high volatility. They may or may not contain functional groups which allow them to solvate the polymer at processing temperatures. Secondary Plasticisers and extenders have limited compatibility. Their main purpose is to decrease costs. Some properties like fire retardancy are improved. The most common Secondary Plasticisers are the Chlorinated Paraffins. Secondary Plasticisers are rarely used as sole Plasticiser except in Semi Rigid applications.

CPW

Chlorinated Paraffin is manufactured by halogenation reaction of Paraffin Oil (Alkane Chain) with Chlorine gas. It is a transparent viscous liquid having distinct sweet odour, and insoluble in water but soluble in other chlorinated solvents. Chlorinated Paraffin is classified according to percentage of chlorination, with chlorination ranging from 40% to 70% by weight. It is used as a secondary plasticizer and flame retardant in PVC Compounds, Cables, Flexible CPVC Pipes, Footwear, Flooring, Films, Artificial Leather, Paints and Adhesives.
Based in the chlorine level and the specific gravity required, CPW is usually available in three grades:

• C42 (SpGr 1200)
• C52 (SpGr 1300)
• C62 (SpGr 1400)

But, at Mahavir, with our association with manufacturers, CPW can be made to suit the specific needs of the customer.

ESBO

Epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) is yellowish viscous liquid which is a collection of organic compounds obtained from the epoxidation of soybean oil. It is used as a secondary plasticizer and stabilizer in PVC plastics. Soybean oil is one of the most readily available and lower-cost vegetable oils in the world. Due to its low cost non-toxic and environmentally friendly properties, as well as its biodegradability over traditional phthalate plasticizers, ESBO is replacing DOP in some applications. It is also used as raw materials for various applications that include functional fluids, fuel additives, polyol replacements, agricultural and pharmaceutical molecules, flavour and fragrances, reactive diluents and UV cure applications, surfactants, adhesives, sealants, coatings, and special inks.
At Mahavir, we deal in ESBO manufactured by Baerlocher.

Poly Oil & Lubricant Oil

Poly Oil is substitute for ESBO which has palm oil as its base as compared to soyabean oil. This oil provides both lubrication effect as well as act as a secondary plasticizer.
Lubricant oil, on the other hand, is a petroleum-based oil which acts an alternative to ESBO where high filler loading is desired. It also has both the lubrication and plasticizing effect. One characteristic of lubricant oil is that it binds the calcium together with other chemicals which help in a higher filler loading reducing the cost of the final product.
These are mostly used in manufacturing conduit pipe, pvc sheets, tarpaulin, and many other semi-rigid PVC applications.
