Poly-Vinyl Chloride (PVC)
Poly-Vinyl Chloride; abbreviated PVC; is the third most popular thermoplastic in the world. It is used in a variety of applications like electronics, automotive components, construction materials, and packaging. The most common use of PVC is in pipe & fittings, films, boards & electrical wires.
PVC comes in four forms: Suspension (Rigid & Flexible), Emulsion (Paste), Mass, and Co-polymers. Rigid PVC (K-67 & K-57) is produced through the addition polymerization reaction of VCM with water & additives. In this form it is used in construction of pipes and in profile applications like boards, doors & windows. By adding plasticizers to rigid PVC, it can become soft and flexible. In this form, it is used in garden hose, electrical cable insulation, films, footwear, etc.
Paste Grade Resin is a very fine size PVC which is mostly used for dip-coatings and artificial leather. It is produced by spray drying an emulsion of PVC in water with emulsifying chemicals & catalysts.
Mass Resin (K-57) is the purest form of PVC as it involves no emulsification or suspending agents. These are mainly made in low K forms and are used in the manufacturing of blister packaging & extruded transparent films.
Copolymer PVC is made by copolymerization of Vinyl Chloride with various monomers. Copolymer of Vinyl Chloride and Vinyl Acetate which forms PVAc is the most important one. Various copolymers of PVC are used in a number of applications which include manufacturing of printing inks, solvent cements, protective coverings, credit cards & swipe cards.
